Do Animals Have Object Permanence?

Humans aren’t the only ones figuring this out.

Dogs, cats, birds, and primates all solve item displacement tasks. They exhibit abilities consistent with Piaget’s fourth and fifth stages. They know if you hide food under a cup, it’s still there.

Some species go further. African gray parrots, parakeets, chimpanzees, and orangutans have displayed evidence of object permanence that spans all six of Piaget’s stages. They can track displacement in ways that rival toddlers.
